How to Choose a Hot Water Provider

Check licensing before anything else

All hot water plumbing work requires a licensed plumber. Gas work requires a licensed gas fitter. Ask for licence numbers and verify them with your state's trade licensing authority before accepting any quote.

Compare installed price — not just the unit price

Advertised hot water prices are often the unit cost only. Always get an all-in quote that includes removal of the old system, installation, tempering valve, copper connections, and GST.

Ask about STC rebates and government incentives

If you are considering a heat pump or solar hot water system, confirm your installer will process the STC rebate and pass it on to you as a discount. The rebate amount should be reflected in the quoted price.

Warranty terms matter as much as the price

Hot water systems carry tank and parts warranties separately. Premium brands typically offer 5–10 year tank warranties. A cheaper unit with a 1-year warranty can cost more over its lifetime if it fails early.

Get at least three quotes for new installs

For like-for-like replacements, price variation between plumbers is typically 15–30%. For system type changes (e.g. electric to heat pump), variation can be 30–50%. Multiple quotes protect you from significantly overpriced proposals.

Emergency replacements — ask for the full scope

When a system fails, the temptation is to just get it fixed fast. Always ask the attending plumber for a written scope and quote before approving work beyond the initial diagnosis — emergency surcharges should be disclosed upfront.
