How to Choose an Earthmoving Company

Check licences and insurance

A reputable earthmoving operator should hold appropriate earthmoving licences and have public liability insurance (minimum $10M recommended). For large machines, confirm the operator holds the correct high-risk work licence class.

Match the machine to the job

Using the right machine size is critical for both cost and efficiency. A 1.5t mini excavator for a backyard trench, a 5t for a house site, a 13t+ for commercial work. Oversized machines waste money; undersized machines take longer.

Get a fixed quote for defined scope

For project work (pool holes, site cuts, driveways), get a fixed-price quote specifying exactly what is included. For hourly hire, agree on estimated hours and confirm whether travel time is billable.

Confirm access and site requirements

Measure gate widths, driveway clearances, and overhead obstacles before requesting quotes. The machine needs to physically reach the work area. Tight access may require a smaller, slower machine at a higher per-metre cost.

Clarify soil disposal arrangements

Soil and rock removal is often the most expensive part of an earthmoving project. Confirm whether disposal is included in the quote, where the material will go, and whether contaminated soil surcharges apply.

Call Dial Before You Dig first

Before any excavation, request underground utility plans through Dial Before You Dig (free service). Hitting a gas, water, or electrical line during excavation is dangerous and extremely costly to repair.
