How to Choose a Ceiling Fan

Match fan size to room size

A 36" fan suits rooms up to 10m², 48" for 10–20m², and 52"+ for rooms over 20m². Undersized fans circulate insufficient air, while oversized fans can create an uncomfortable draft in small rooms. Measure your room before selecting a fan size.

Choose DC over AC for regular use

DC motor fans use 50–70% less energy, run significantly quieter, offer more speed settings, and include reverse mode as standard. The upfront premium ($100–$300 more) is recouped in 3–5 years through lower energy bills. AC fans remain a practical choice for budget installations and infrequently used rooms.

Check ceiling height and structure

Standard fans require a minimum ceiling height of 2.4m (flush mount) or 2.7m (downrod mount). High or raked ceilings may need an extended downrod ($80–$180 extra). The ceiling must support the fan weight — confirm with your electrician whether a reinforced mounting bracket is needed.

Confirm IP rating for outdoor use

Indoor fans are not rated for moisture. Covered patios need a damp-rated (IP44) fan. Semi-exposed locations need a wet-rated (IP55+) fan. Using an indoor fan outdoors is unsafe and will void the warranty. Coastal and high-humidity locations should use stainless steel or ABS plastic blades.

Use a licensed electrician for installation

Ceiling fan installation is prescribed electrical work in Australia — it must be performed by a licensed electrician. DIY fan wiring is illegal. The electrician will ensure safe mounting, correct wiring, and compliance with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules.

Consider smart home integration

WiFi-enabled smart fans can be controlled via smartphone apps and voice assistants (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit). Smart fans cost $100–$300 more than equivalent non-smart models but add convenience and scheduling capability. Aftermarket smart controllers can add WiFi to existing fans for $50–$120.
