How to Choose an Asbestos Removalist
Verify their asbestos removal licence
Every asbestos removalist must hold a current Class A (friable) or Class B (bonded) licence issued by your state workplace safety regulator. Check the licence number on the regulator's website. Never hire an unlicensed operator — it is a criminal offence for both the removalist and the property owner.
Check insurance and qualifications
Ensure the removalist carries public liability insurance (minimum $10 million recommended), workers compensation insurance, and appropriate asbestos-specific coverage. Ask for copies of certificates. Check that workers hold current asbestos awareness and removal competency certificates.
Get a detailed written quote
A professional asbestos removal quote should specify: scope of work, type of asbestos being removed, site setup and containment method, disposal location and fees, air monitoring arrangements, clearance certification, and total price including GST. Be wary of vague or verbal-only quotes.
Ask about notification and compliance
Licensed asbestos removal requires notification to the state regulator (typically 5 business days before work starts). Ask the removalist to confirm they will handle all regulatory notifications, maintain a removal control plan, and provide a clearance certificate on completion.
Understand the difference between Class A and Class B
Class B licence holders can only remove bonded (non-friable) asbestos like cement sheeting, roof tiles, and vinyl floor tiles. Class A licence holders can remove all types including friable (crumbly) asbestos like insulation, spray coatings, and pipe lagging. Friable asbestos is far more dangerous and expensive to remove.
Get independent testing before and after
Use an independent asbestos assessor (not the removal company) for pre-removal testing and post-removal clearance inspections. This eliminates conflict of interest and provides independent verification that the work has been completed to the required standard.
