Guttering Costs

Material type

Colorbond and PVC are the most affordable gutter materials. Aluminium offers better corrosion resistance at a moderate premium. Copper is the highest-cost option, suited to heritage or architectural homes. Material choice affects both upfront cost and maintenance requirements over the gutter lifespan.

Length and profile

Total linear metres of guttering drives the base cost. Quad, half-round and K-style profiles are standard. Box gutters and custom profiles cost more due to fabrication and installation complexity. Longer runs reduce per-metre cost due to fewer joins and less setup time.

Height and access

Single-storey homes are the cheapest to gutter. Two-storey and multi-level homes require scaffolding or elevated work platforms, adding $500–$2,000+ to the project. Steep roofs, narrow access, and difficult site conditions further increase labour time.

Removal of old guttering

Removing and disposing of old gutters adds to the project cost. Rusted or asbestos-containing materials require specialist removal. Confirm whether removal is included in your quote or charged as a separate line item.

Leaf guard / gutter protection

Gutter guards add $25–$45 per linear metre but significantly reduce ongoing cleaning costs. Mesh, micro-mesh, and solid-top systems each have different price points and effectiveness. In leafy areas, gutter guards pay for themselves within a few years.

Downpipes and drainage connections

New downpipes, stormwater connections, and splash guards are commonly needed with a full gutter replacement. Each downpipe adds $20–$40 per linear metre. Connection to existing stormwater may require a licensed plumber in some jurisdictions.

1. Measure-up and fall planning

The installer measures each roof edge, checks outlet positions and determines the required fall so water moves cleanly to the downpipes without obvious visual sagging.

2. Removal of old materials

Existing gutters, brackets and sometimes downpipes are removed. This stage often reveals hidden fascia damage, rust staining or blocked stormwater entries that were not obvious from ground level.

3. Fascia prep and bracket installation

Any rotten timber or damaged fascia lining is repaired before the new system goes on. Brackets are then installed to the planned fall, because even premium gutter material performs poorly if the set-out is rushed.

4. Gutter lengths, joints and outlets

Lengths are installed, joined and sealed, then outlets and end caps are fitted. Custom corners, box gutters and long continuous runs require more fabrication and usually sit above the basic per-metre range.

5. Downpipes and stormwater checks

Downpipes are added or replaced, and the crew checks that discharge points are not blocked or undersized. A gutter replacement only solves half the problem if stormwater cannot clear properly.

6. Water test and handover

Good contractors run water through the system, confirm falls and explain maintenance intervals. This is the time to ask about leaf guard compatibility, paint warranty and any areas that may still need drainage work.

Sydney

Leaf-heavy suburbs, two-storey housing stock and tight side access mean Sydney guttering projects often cost more than national averages. Inner-city terraces also create scaffold and parking friction that needs to be priced explicitly.

Melbourne

Melbourne’s mix of heritage homes, weather exposure and premium facade expectations keeps demand strong for box-gutter repairs, concealed drainage details and higher-end powder-coated finishes.

Brisbane

Brisbane’s intense summer downpours mean outlet sizing and stormwater capacity matter as much as the gutter material itself. Elevated homes can also increase setup time and ladder risk.

Perth

Coastal exposure and strong sun make material selection important in Perth. Aluminium and well-coated steel systems perform better over time than cheaper options exposed to salt and heat.
