Tree removal cost: what drives the quote
Tree removal has one of the widest price ranges of any home job, and for good reason. A small backyard tree and a large gum near powerlines are different worlds of risk. Here is what sets the number.
Cost by size
Size is the first lever. A small tree under 5m runs about $250 to $800, a medium 5m to 10m tree $800 to $2,500, a large 10m to 15m tree $2,500 to $6,000, and anything above 15m from $6,000 to $15,000.
Height, trunk diameter and canopy spread all feed into how long the job takes and what gear it needs.
The factors that push it up
Access is the big one. If a climber, crane or cherry picker is needed, or the drop zone is tight between a house and a fence, the quote climbs. Proximity to powerlines and structures adds risk and cost.
Stump grinding and green waste haulage are usually separate line items, so confirm whether they are included or left kerbside.
Do not skip the permit check
Most councils protect trees above a certain size or of listed species. Illegal removal fines run into the tens of thousands, so check before you book. A reputable arborist will raise this before they quote.
The short version
- +Size sets the band: $250 for a small tree up to $15,000 for a giant.
- +Access and powerlines are the biggest cost multipliers.
- +Check council permits first: fines dwarf the removal cost.
