Plumber call-out fees in Australia, explained

A dripping tap and a burst pipe are not the same job, and they are not the same price. Plumbers charge a call-out fee plus an hourly rate, with fixed prices for common work. Knowing how those parts stack up stops a fair quote from feeling like a surprise.

The call-out fee

The call-out fee covers travel and the initial inspection, typically $60 to $150, and often the first 15 to 30 minutes on site. Many plumbers waive it when you go ahead with the quoted work, so it is always worth asking.

Think of it as the price of getting a licensed tradesperson to your door with a stocked van, not a penalty.

The hourly rate

Standard plumbing labour runs about $80 to $200 per hour, with materials and fixtures usually charged on top. Complexity and access move the number: a tap under an open vanity is quick, a pipe buried in a slab is not.

For a defined job like a hot water system supplied and installed, expect a fixed range of roughly $900 to $4,500 depending on the system type.

Why emergencies cost more

After-hours and emergency work runs about 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate, plus a higher call-out. A burst pipe flooding your kitchen at 2am is worth it. A slow-dripping tap can wait for business hours and the standard rate.
