Why switchboard upgrade quotes vary so much
Ask three electricians to quote a switchboard upgrade and the numbers can look wildly apart. They usually are not competing on price so much as quoting different scopes. Here is what sits behind the spread.
How electricians price
Electricians bill by the hour, about $80 to $150, plus a call-out fee of $80 to $150, with fixed rates for standard jobs. A new power point installed is usually $150 to $250, and doing several in one visit is normally discounted.
After-hours emergencies roughly double the rate, running $150 to $300 per hour.
The switchboard spread
A switchboard upgrade ranges from about $770 to $3,225, and the scope explains almost all of it. Adding safety switches to a sound board sits at the cheap end. Replacing an old asbestos panel, upgrading the mains and relocating the board sits at the top.
When you compare quotes, compare scopes: mains upgrade, number of circuits, safety switches and any relocation. A cheap quote that skips the mains is not the same job.
One rule that never changes
DIY electrical work is illegal in every Australian state, voids insurance, and is genuinely dangerous. All fixed wiring must be done by a licensed electrician, full stop.
